Camp Simcha, the renowned summer program of Chai Lifeline for children battling cancer and chronic illnesses, welcomed a special guest this week: New York Jets rookie offensive tackle Leander Wiegand. Standing at 6’5” and 302 pounds, Wiegand brought more than his football presence—he brought joy, inspiration, and the spirit of resilience to campers who face medical challenges every day.
Wiegand shared, “Spending the day at Camp Simcha was truly unforgettable. Meeting these incredible kids reminded me what real strength and courage look like. I can only hope to be half the warriors they already are. It meant so much to share laughs, throw the football around, and just be present with a bunch of absolute ballers. Days like this remind me what’s most important.”
At Camp Simcha, children with pediatric cancer and lifelong illnesses find a place where they can forget hospital rooms and treatments. With a hospital onsite and pediatric oncologists administering chemotherapy on the grounds, campers can continue vital care while experiencing the magic of summer.
Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, a longtime friend of Camp Simcha, along with Maven Strategy Group, joined in making this visit possible. Year after year, Eichenstein has brought world-class athletes to Glen Spey to lift the spirits of campers, showing them that their courage is every bit as inspiring as anything on the playing field.
“Football is about teamwork, perseverance, and never giving up, even when the odds are stacked against you,” said Rabbi Simcha Scholar, Chief Executive Officer of Chai Lifeline. “That is exactly what we see every day at Camp Simcha: children who fight like champions, with courage and heart. We are deeply grateful to Leander Wiegand and the New York Jets for bringing such joy to our campers, and to Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein for his continued friendship and his unwavering support.”
Wiegand’s visit left campers smiling, laughing, and playing like the children they deserve to be. For a community that battles unimaginable challenges, the chance to connect with a professional athlete and share in the joy of football was a powerful reminder: even in the face of illness, the human spirit can shine.
