Chai Lifeline welcomed Robert J. Rodriguez, President and CEO of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), to Camp Simcha, its flagship medically supervised overnight camp for children living with serious illness, on Tuesday, July 21. The visit offered President Rodriguez a closer look at how Camp Simcha combines expert medical care with the joy and freedom of summer camp, creating an environment where children facing serious health challenges can experience the childhood moments they deserve.
As he toured the camp, President Rodriguez met with campers, volunteers, medical professionals, and staff, enabling him to witness the comprehensive care that makes Camp Simcha possible. From the camp’s state-of-the-art medical center to its waterfront, sports fields, and activity spaces, he saw how children with complex medical needs are able to experience the joy, independence, and friendships that define summer camp.

Reflecting on his visit, President Rodriguez said, “I think what surprised me most is the sense of community. The amount of care that’s given to everyone’s experience not just medical care but emotional components, as well as making this available to families that are really going through difficult times. There are so many other economic burdens, so to know there’s no tuition and it’s free of charge and literally the people who are serving your children are willing to do it out of the goodness of their heart just makes that even more of a special place.”
