Chai Lifeline’s Rivkah Reichmann, LCSW, Associate Director of Camp Simcha Special, Mushka Nathanson, BSN, RN, CPN, and Chris Lally, RN, CDES from Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone recently took the stage at the American Camp Association Tri-State Camp Conference to share critical insights on Managing Diabetes at Camp.

With 1 in 400 children affected by Type 1 diabetes, proper planning and training are essential to ensuring that every child—regardless of medical challenges—can safely and fully enjoy a summer camp experience. Their session provided best practices and tangible strategies to help non-medical camps be more inclusive and empower children with diabetes to thrive.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and growth that summer camp provides, regardless of medical challenges,” said Reichmann. “By equipping camps with the right knowledge and tools, we can create an environment where children with Type 1 diabetes feel safe, included, and empowered to thrive alongside their peers.”

I love the focus on empowering kids with Type 1 diabetes to enjoy camp just like any other child. It’s essential to have the right tools and knowledge in place to make that happen!
Wow, who knew managing diabetes at camp could be a thing? I mean, I thought the biggest challenge was just keeping kids from roasting marshmallows ’til they burst! 😂
Props to these folks for making camp safer for kids with diabetes. Just imagine the poor kids getting a snack and hearing, ‘sorry, you can’t have that’ – man, that’s gotta hurt!
I really like the idea of allowing children with diabetes mellitus to enjoy the camp just like other children.
This is a very important article about diabetes management at camp. It’s great to see organizations like Chai Lifeline providing support for children with diabetes. Technology and AI tools can also help in health management. I recently discovered an AI tool called Veo 3 for creating educational videos with synchronized audio. It could be useful for creating educational content about diabetes management. If you’re interested in AI tools for content creation, visit https://3-veo.com
