Chai Lifeline Hosts Transformative Weekend for Families Facing Cancer at Camp Simcha

From December 13–15, 2024, the Stella K. Abraham Family Center on the Jack & Moishe Horn Campus, home of Camp Simcha and Camp Simcha Special, was filled with warmth and connection as Chai Lifeline hosted a weekend retreat for families living with pediatric cancer.

This much-anticipated event provided families with the opportunity to unwind in a serene, supportive environment while experiencing the joy and magic of Camp Simcha. From engaging programs to meaningful connections, the retreat offered something for everyone.

Families participated in a variety of activities, including a dedicated day camp for children of all ages, a dynamic teen program, and inspiring lectures and meetups for parents. A program highlight was the participation of Rabbi Binyomin Weinreb of “Mordy’s Shtiebel” in Jackson, NJ, who delivered two heartfelt talks filled with support, advice, and empathy. The weekend also featured uplifting moments with Rabbi Sruli Fried, MSW, for the men, and Mrs. Chani Juravel, LCSW, for the women, alongside powerful messages in the shul from Rabbi Duvi Feiler, Camp Simcha Boys Associate Head Counselor, and Rabbi Mordechai Gobioff, MSW. Together, these sessions fostered a sense of hope and inspiration for all.

Highlights of the retreat included a breathtaking fire show and a spirited Melava Malka on Motzei Shabbos. Moms enjoyed a creative paint night, providing a therapeutic outlet and a chance to bond. The outstanding team of Chai Lifeline volunteers ensured every family felt supported, creating a seamless and memorable experience.

One participant shared “ It dawned on me that for the past few years, the only time I was away for Shabbos was with our daughter at the hospital. This is the first time in a  very long time we all went away as a family! Thank you for letting us be part of something amazing and we cannot thank your organization for everything they have done and continue to do. We are speechless and humbled!”

This retreat exemplifies Chai Lifeline’s unwavering commitment to supporting families through every step of their journey, bringing light, joy, and strength to those who need it most.

“Our weekend retreats are a chance for families to step away from the challenges of daily life, connect with others who share similar experiences, and discover the incredible community that Chai Lifeline offers,” said  Chai Lifeline’s National Director of Client Services Rabbi Mordechai Gobioff, MSW.
